Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok signed a law on Sweden's accession to NATO. Budapest was the last member to agree to the enlargement of the Alliance. Once the ratification is signed by the Hungarian President, Sweden will become the 32nd member of the Alliance.

On Tuesday, the new Hungarian president, Tamas Sulyok, signed the decision on Sweden's accession to NATO, which was voted by the Hungarian parliament a week earlier.

It was the first decision by the president, who took office on Tuesday. Sulyok succeeds Katalin Novak, who left in an atmosphere of scandal after pardoning a person convicted of covering up paedophilia.

NATO enlargement. Sweden to become the 32nd member of the Alliance

The Hungarian parliament passed a law on Sweden's membership of NATO on 26th February. Of the 194 MPs present, six voted against. The Swedish proposal has been waiting in the National Assembly for a vote since July 2022.

At the same session, the parliament also accepted the resignation of President Katalina Novak. A moment later, a decision was made to elect a new head of state, Tamas Sulyok.

Hungary has agreed to allow Sweden to join NATO as the last country in the Alliance, although Viktor Orbán's government has repeatedly assured that this will not happen.

Sweden will become the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
