On Thursday (07.03) afternoon, the Swedish government decided to join NATO. This is the last action that had to be taken on the Swedish side for the country to become the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Sweden officially joins NATO

Formally, the government approved joining NATO at a special meeting in Stockholm chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Ebba Busch.

We have received an official invitation from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg," Busch said at a specially convened conference. "Now begins a new chapter in the history of the Kingdom of Sweden," she added, referring to the more than 200-year-old tradition of neutrality of the Swedish state.

Then, on Thursday in Washington, where Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Foreign Minister Tobias Billstroem are staying, the procedure for Sweden's accession to NATO will be completed with the transfer of Sweden's accession documents to the United States. The territory of Sweden will be guaranteed by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which provides for the joint defence of allies.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski on Sweden's accession to NATO

The head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, assured that the current government coalition will stand firmly behind the EU, NATO and the Weimar Triangle.

We are pleased to welcome Sweden as a new member of NATO, and our unity in defending the freedom and security of the region is made even stronger by the addition of our partner to the Alliance. As a coalition, on 15 October we will stand firmly behind the European Union, the North Atlantic Alliance and the Weimar Triangle, as we promised the Poles. Together we are building a strong, united Europe," the head of Polish diplomacy said in a video posted on the X platform.

Sweden applied to join NATO in May 2022 after a historic change in the attitude of the Social Democrats, who ruled the country at the time. The reason for this was a similar decision by Finland and the Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson recalled that without Sweden's accession, Finland's membership was not fully complete in terms of defence capabilities
